There’s no magic pill for success in online business. There’s no ONE strategy that will change your mindset AND make you more money AND make marketing easy. But the closest thing I’ve found to this (and it’s pretty damn close) is creating healthy and sustainable habits.
I’ll admit that healthy habits don’t sound that cool. But many neurodiverse brains struggle with this more than anything. So when you nail them, it feels pretty damn magical.
Habits are small actions you do on a regular basis. Think of them as your brain’s shortcuts. They’re the automatic routines and behaviors you follow, often without consciously thinking about them. Habits give you the structure of your daily life and workflow. They are how you get things done, but also how you make sense of the world.
Good habits give you what I call the 3 types of wealth: money, time, and energy. Not every habit does it all, but each one should improve at least 1 type of wealth. (And conversely, unhealthy habits take away at least 1 wealth type).
Staying organized, saving time, and doing things efficiently—these are all things that can be way harder for neurodiverse entrepreneurs. Something simple for a ‘regular’ brain, like remembering to eat lunch, might need its own reminder system so it doesn’t fall through the cracks.
I want to pause here and say that this is a morally neutral fact. It’s easy to fall into a shame spiral about what KC Davis calls the negligence of ‘care tasks’ in How To Keep House While Drowning. You can’t shame yourself into action over the long term. Instead, put the structure in place to support yourself. Healthy habits are part of that support!
When you have this, you free up brainpower for executive function decisions, like planning, strategizing, and looking ahead.
Speaking of, strategies and tactics are a necessary but insufficient part of success. You need a system to get to where you want to be. When you have habits working for you, you can manage your energy more effectively, reduce overwhelm, and tap into your strengths.
James Clear introduced me to this concept in Atomic Habits. The result of creating habits is that you actually shift your identity. As a service provider, you transform yourself from a ‘gun for hire,’ constantly hustling and overwhelmed, to an ‘in-demand expert.’ You can now choose how to allocate your time and energy wisely.
Every entrepreneur, neurodiverse or not, has Comfy Sweatpants and Sparkly Suits in their wardrobe of tasks. Comfort zone tasks are like your favorite sweatpants – comfy, forgiving, and oh-so-familiar. They’re the things that feel easy and natural to you. You have no problem getting them done.
On the other hand, Sparkly Suit tasks are the glamorous, intimidating ones. They could be entirely new challenges, dreaded to-dos, or tasks you perpetually put on the back burner. You need to be wearing your Sparkly Suit to transform your identity—whatever that aspirational YOU might be.
So how do you don your Sparkly Suit more effortlessly? How can you stop those bad habits and build new ones that work for your unique brain?
1. Start Small: Don’t overwhelm yourself with grandiose changes. Begin with baby steps. If you’re trying to establish a morning routine, start by waking up just 15 minutes earlier. Once that feels natural, add another small habit, like stretching or deep breathing.
2. Focus on Shifting Your Identity: Remember, it’s not just about what you do; it’s about who you become. Want to get into pickleball? Don’t tell yourself ‘I will try to play pickleball 3 times a week’—say ‘I am a pickleball player.’ If you want to build a habit of positive self-talk, see yourself as someone who practices self-compassion regularly. It’s that shift in identity that drives lasting change.
3. Create a Supportive Environment: Surround yourself with a community or supportive people who understand your journey. Sharing your goals and progress with others can provide motivation and accountability.
4. Use Visualizations: Imagine yourself completing the habit. Visualizing the process and the positive outcome can be a powerful motivator.
5. Track Your Progress: Keep a habit journal or use habit-tracking apps to monitor your journey. Celebrate your wins and learn from any setbacks.
Remember, creating healthy habits takes time and patience. Be kind to yourself on this journey. Us neurodiverse folks need to celebrate the wins along the way, not whether or not we’re awesome at the habit. Enjoy the process and stay flexible so that you can change up your habit-building to work with your brain.
So, where will you start? Where can you introduce small changes that will make a big difference in your entrepreneurial life? Your journey begins with a single step – or, should I say, a single habit.
